Q: Surely it must be easier than all this for schools?

A: Well it certainly would be easier if it was simplified, but, unfortunately, it isn't. 'Copyright' is complicated because:

  • the rules are different for different media
  • new technologies and applications are creating new copyright situations all the time
  • schools are using digital technologies more and more
  • as well as 'consuming' copyright materials schools are increasingly 're-using', storing, publishing and creating their own materials which raises the 'copyright' stakes

Copyright will continue to be an issue and we need to alert pupils about how it works in the world of work and in their personal life. As teachers and schools we also need to have an informed view to support our working practice.
